Tellus Partners With Kansas City CDFI on FDIC-Insured Savings
Fintech app Tellus teams up with Central Bank of Kansas City to offer consumers an FDIC-insured deposit account through a certified community lender.
Fintech startup Tellus has formed a banking partnership with Central Bank of Kansas City, a certified Community Development Financial Institution, to deliver an FDIC-insured deposit account to consumers, the companies announced from Mountain View, Calif.
The arrangement pairs Tellus's consumer-facing technology platform with a community bank that has built its reputation over decades on combining financial soundness with a mission-driven lending approach. Customer deposits are held at Central Bank of Kansas City, a Member FDIC institution, providing the federal deposit insurance protections standard to traditional bank accounts.

Community Development Financial Institutions occupy a distinct regulatory niche, certified by the U.S. Treasury Department to serve underserved markets and communities that mainstream financial institutions have historically bypassed. By aligning with such an institution, Tellus positions its product at the intersection of consumer technology convenience and community-focused banking — a combination that regulators and investors alike have shown growing interest in as fintech partnerships face heightened scrutiny.
The deal reflects a broader trend of consumer fintech companies seeking chartered bank partners rather than operating solely through banking-as-a-service intermediaries, a model that has drawn regulatory attention in recent years. Anchoring deposits at a CDFI-certified institution may also appeal to socially conscious consumers who want their savings to support community lending missions alongside competitive account features.
